There
are local markets in both the Port (Plaza de Abastos), and
Mazarrón (covered at the Plaza del Convento). These
are open daily except Sundays and are an ideal source of local
produce such as vegetables, meat, fish etc. In addition there
are what the Spanish call mercadillos (street markets). These
are held in Mazarrón on Saturday mornings around the
streets and square surrounding the usual fixed market. A much
larger mercadillo happens most Sundays throughout the year
at Puerto de Mazarrón. The official location given
is Ordenación Bahía but it can hardly be said
that this event is hard to find. Just get to the Port and
turn into Via Axial. This is an extremely large street market
selling a wide range of produce, gifts, clothes, leather items
etc, it should not be missed. Enjoy the Spainish Sunday morning
treat of churros and a beer!
Additionally there is also
a summer mercadillo held most evenings at the Port with an
arts and crafts flavour which is normally mixed with various
goods on offer from the many regional Morrocan and Senegali
traders. Local information still gives the location as the
Paseo del Puerto. In recent years however, it has usually
had a more central location! |
